Here’s my dilemma.
I’ve already asked Soulmumma but anyone would think she’s busy at the moment (tee hee) so I’m putting it out there. I am starting to try to get pregnant but I have a big trip overseas planned from the end of December till the end of January. Would you put off trying to get pregnant in case you had the morning sickness from hell or just push on (no pun intended) and see what happens? We are doing a bit of travelling and I am worried I’ll be so ill I won’t enjoy myself. Of course I don’t expect to be lucky enough to get pregnant in the first few months of trying but with that 35th birthday looming I am reluctant to put it off.
Also – does the amount of pain you suffer when you have your period point to what type of suffering you will endure with morning sickness?
Opinion, mums out there!

The decision has been made for me – the husband has said he really wants to wait in case I am spewing my ring up the entire time. And since he never has an opinion on anything, I have to respect it! I may have morning sickness, I may not – but I don’t want to risk it. I’m a bit sad about it and paranoid too to be honest because I fear I am going to have a hard time getting pregnant (fat and old). I know, I know, this may not be the case, but better than thinking it will be easy, hey?
Thanks to everyone for your comments, they mean a lot. And those of you that have told me how excited you are that I will soon be breeding are very special cases indeed…because if I was 10 – no, even 5 years younger I wouldn’t be having this conversation with any of you! LOL! No, seriously…I really feel as ready as I’ll ever be. As long as I don’t think about the implications too much.
My story is a bit crap, sorry in advance.
Before I fell pregnant, we had booked a trip down to Melbourne. I had planned on visiting various cocktail bars and restaurants, an exhibition here and there, doing some go-go dancing, maybe even seeing a band or two. Instead I spent the whole time going to bed early, watching really shitty shows on F0xt3l from my hotel bed, whingeing, drinking tea and eating lots to try and curb the evil “morning” sickness (a misnomer if there ever was one, I was sick all day!). Itching to have another trip down there (without Master P) so I can do what I meant to do last time!
Incidentally, we met up at the theatre all that time ago when I was 5 days pregnant! (Well, technically by the doctor’s calculation I was already close to 3 weeks).
P.S. Don’t think there’s any correlation between period pain and morning sickness, but that could be just me.
Hard to say! Never heard of the morning sickness and period pain correlation either. Um, I don’t know!! I went on my honeymoon at 7 months pregnant, and whilst it was fun, it wasn’t the same as it would have been if I could walk around easily and do more things.
(SO EXCITING BTW!!)
I never suffered morning sickness until I was at least about 8 weeks pregnant. No comparison to period pain, it doesn’t hurt, it makes you feel like crap, just imagine a hangover, that lasts all day. Not sure when you planned on starting to ‘try’, but if you tried when you were away, chances are you’d still be feeling fine, even if you ‘fell’ straight away.
I have had 6 kids.. NEVER EVER got morning sickness.. at all.
There is nothing to say you will either.
I would still keep trying as it may take a while.. or it may happen tonight!
Ya won’t know till it does happen …
Don’t believe period pain and morning sickness go hand in hand ….
ONWARD….
Exciting times ahead 🙂 Like Chris, I never had any morning sickness either which was a good thing because I really hate feeling woozy.
I would go for gold in the shagging department because as you may recall the UK food can be so dodgy, so you’ll never know if it’s the food or the morning sickness!
(can you spot the non-breeder in this comments thread? 🙂
I was backpacking in europe and the uk at the start of my pregnancy. It was fine coz I was home before the ms kicked in at around 6 weeks (then lasted til 20 (F) then 22 (C) weeks).
Morning sickness is a very personal thing and I’m pretty confident in saying it has nothing much to do with anything and is a very individual thing – even pregnancy specific thing (like you might not get it first time round, but it might be hideous the second time).
I wouldn’t be as worried about the ms as I would be when that makes your baby (YOUR BABY – OMG!!!) due and how old that makes them starting kinder/school. Wish I’d realised and I wouldn’t have had jan and feb bubbas as they will be the youngest in class (probably).
Also I wouldn’t be so concerned about not falling pregnant quickly, you might be super fertile!
I say go for it, hope for the best and enjoy yourself away (and trying)!
Sorry for the delay – geeez!
OR… get through the end of the school year and give it a red hot go on your trip. You’ll be exercising (walking) a lot, you’ll be away from work (read – RELAXED) and do your damnedest to come back preggers (advise mr btrx) and then the morning sickness (IF you get it), will kick in (most likely) when you get home! 🙂
I second Kate’s suggestion :). And Shauna’s suggestion is brilliant, hahaha. Go for gold!
Master P is a mid-July baby, he will probably be the oldest or the youngest in his year. To be honest, I’d prefer it to be the latter but we’ll see when the time comes.
Coming from another non-breeder, I would say don’t run the risk of ruining your trip. It could be your last hurrah sans kids – and as great as they are, there is always a before kids, but never an after them. I also can’t help but think of friends who were 3/4 through a year-long RTW trip and had to go back home (Switzerland) due to all day sickness – Patricia literally couldn’t do anything beyond the hotel room. No South America for them :o(. I suppose you have to ask if waiting three months make all that much difference to your chances of getting pregnant, which, like whether or not you will get sick, isn’t something you can know either – good luck!
I say get trying! If you are pregnant, you may not have morning sickness yet or at all. And there are heaps of things that you can take to relieve the morning sickness too.
I just wanted to say I am very excited for you too. It’s the most wonderful time of my life watching my babies grow up (way too fast mind you)
Like the other girls have said, everyone is different and every pregnancy is different. I had hardly any morning sickness with the girls and too much with Jarryd. But I also agree with CKK, your holidays will never be the same after you have kids so make the most of your time together.
Relax and enjoy practicing!!
I haven’t posted before but had to comment on this one – I would wait till you return before you get pregnant. I had horrendous morning/all day sickness for 26 weeks – I have never felt so sick in all my life. The labour was a breeze in comparison. If I was lying down completely flat (without a pillow) I was ok, as soon as I sat or stood up I felt unwell. I remember once lying down in the shower because it was the only way I could get clean and not vomit. I lost over 25 kilos in the first 3 months – I must be one of the few women who weighed less at full term than they did at the beginning. I had to take all of my long service leave because I ran out of sick leave. THEN – all at once I felt good and the remaining 13 weeks were easy! However I decided to only have the 1 child even though I originally would have liked 3 – I just couldn’t go through it again. My mother had no morning sickness at all with any of her pregnancies but my grandmother had been the same as me. I don’t know if there is any correlation between morning sickness and period pain but my obstetrician said that he noticed that a lot of the women who get morning sickness often have very fair skin and reddish hair – which is me and my grandmother. Anyway – good luck!
Just to add another view, but of a different kind. Leaving it til then gives you time to make sure your body is as ready as you can be – go get all your prenatal bloods tests for iron levels, folate etc. The baby will take everything it needs and leave you with the dregs, so top up now while you can.
Then, enjoy shagging like bunnies on your trip! If you get pregnant, fabulous (and you shouldn’t get sick til you are home again), if not keep at it when you get home :o)
